Bempton Cafe at RSPB Bempton Cliffs

“Last week I came to Bempton to see the awesome wildlife spectacle. I’m back a week later with my wife because I just had to get her to try the millionaires flapjack they sell from the catering caravan. I’ve been telling her about it all week.”

This is just one of the brilliant reactions of visitors to a new food venture at RSPB Bempton Cliffs. Ethical Catering Outdoors (ECO) is tickling the tastebuds of foodies visiting the nature reserve near Bridlington and Filey. From their trailer in the car park next to the Visitor Centre they’re selling all sorts of gorgeous goodies, which are being eagerly snapped up by hungry visitors.

Where once you were only able to get a cup of tea and a biscuit if you visited the reserve – setting for one of nature’s wildlife spectacles during the seabird breeding season - now you can savour pizza made with organic wholemeal flour, mixed bean soup or vegetable curry. There is also a tempting selection of sandwiches and chocolate cakes.

This new venture came from a chance conversation between Visitor Centre Manager Alan Dalton and local pioneering ethical restaurant entrepreneur Katie Wheelwright.

Alan wanted to provide a better offer of food at Bempton and Katie was looking for the next challenge after selling her highly successful vegetarian café.

Now Katie has brought her famous cooking and vision to RSPB Bempton Cliffs – and the results are delighting visitors, staff and volunteers alike.

As Katie puts it: “I wanted to bring a new taste to catering from a trailer. In ECO Catering I concentrate on using organic, Fairtrade and locally grown ingredients in the food I make for visitors to RSPB Bempton Cliffs. It is a pleasure to be working with such an environmentally committed organisation as the RSPB. “

RSPB Bempton Cliffs is five miles from Bridlington. From March to September, the most amazing wildlife spectacle is played out on the towering white cliffs, as 200,000 seabirds play out their life-and-death struggle to raise a family.

Visitors can watch this breath-taking drama from one of five special viewpoints and marvel at the sights and sounds of one of England’s most important seabird colonies.

You’ll see gannets, kittiwakes, razorbills and gannets – and, if you go before the end of June – you might even be lucky enough to see the famous puffins.
