Details
The church owes its great architectural interest to having been developed through 400 years of almost continuous building from 1120to 1530. Many of the Craft Guilds of the town adopted St Mary's and, during the Middle-Ages, it was regarded as the Parish Church of the town.
The West front is a fine example of late fourteenth century work and may well have influenced that of the Chapel of King's College, Cambridge, which was built more than half a century later.
See the carving of the March Hare said to have inspired Lewis Carol's Alice in Wonderland, see the unique ceiling of Kings painted in 1446 and representing the Kings of England before that time, see the highly decorated ceiling of stars and constellations.
On special occasions or through advance booking you can see the "priest's rooms" accessed through a small door and spiral staircase and containing all sorts of unusual treasures.
You will receive a warm welcome when visiting St Mary's.

From Beverley Train Station on foot: Walk towards the small roundabout and take the first exit off the roundabout. Walk along the road until you get to Wednesday Market. Turn right and walk all the way through the town centre, passing the various shops and Saturday Market Square Band Stand. When you reach the traffic lights, keep walking straight and you will see St Mary's Church in front of you (to the right) - approx 13 mins walk.
From Beverley Bus Station on foot: Head in towards Beverley Town Centre on Sow Hill Road. Turn right at Ladygate. Walk to the end of the street and turn left onto Hengate. You will see St Mary's on the opposite side of the road - approx 3 mins walk.
From York: Follow the A1079 towards Hull. Pass Bishop Burton village and take the second exit at the next roundabout. Drive along the road passing Beverley Racecourse and Beverley Westwood. Turn right at the traffic lights onto Northbar Within. St Mary's is on the left.
From Hull: Follow the A1079 to York. Take the third exit off the roundabout signposted for Beverley Racecourse. Drive along the road passing Beverley Racecourse and Beverley Westwood. Turn right at the traffic lights onto Northbar Within. St Mary's is on the left.
