Yorkshire Wolds Villages

The Yorkshire Wolds are home to a string of beautiful picturesque villages dotted along the route of the Yorkshire Wolds Way and beyond. Some are well known, and some are a little more hidden, but all of them have secrets ready to whisper in an explorer’s ear.

Thixendale

Where many dry valleys meet Thixendale’s snug location is a favourite stopping off point for walkers along the Yorkshire Wolds Way with accommodation, a shop and village pub. Nearby is the site of The Three Trees by David Hockney and gallery of the acclaimed wildlife artist Robert Fuller.

Sledmere

Depicted in David Hockney’s vivid paintings of the area the village is home to Sledmere House, ancestral home to Sir Tatton Sykes, and one of the regions finest stately home with fabulous of antique furniture and fine paintings plus acres of gardens and parklands designed by Capbility Brown.

Huggate

Find panoramic views across the Yorkshire Wolds, a mix of old and new houses and traditional welcoming village pub with rooms, popular with walkers and cyclists offering hearty food and real ales.

Welton

Picturesque Welton is steeped in history. The Green Dragon, 17th century coaching Inn played its part in history, Dick Turpin is reputed to have frequented the establishment before his capture.

Millington

Relax at the village inn or The Ramblers Rest tearooms after a woodland walk through the local nature reserve of Millington Wood which is designated as an area special scientific interest.

Bishop Burton

A charming rural village set in a hollow with whitewashed cottages, red brick houses, a pretty pond and a traditional village pub. Bishop Burton Agricultural College holds many public events.

Bainton

The impressive St Andrew’s church, known as the Cathedral of the Wolds, has a font believed to date back to the Norman period. Wolds Village has tearooms, gallery and a gift shop.

Skidby

Skidby has last working mill in Yorkshire has magnificent views over the Wolds. It is set in an acre of land with Museum of East Riding Rural Life and cafe
